Albert Smith's Culinary Capers: The Final Five and all the short stories Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 1,291 ratings

Baking. It can get a guy killed.

A shadowy master criminal has been kidnapping experts from the food industry and stealing both food and equipment. The crimes are so unrelated no one in the world had noticed the connections.

No one except Albert Smith, that is.

He’s got almost nothing to go on, but with every place he visits, he gets just a little closer to the truth. He’s not working alone though, his faithful sidekick, Rex Harrison the former police dog is right there with him. Can the two of them pull off the impossible and find the man Albert chose to dub ‘the Gastrothief’?

Well, maybe, but it’s not going to be easy. Not least because the nation’s police suspect Albert of the very crimes he wants them to investigate.

On the run, far from home, and almost completely alone, can they turn their darkest hour into their greatest triumph?

Titles included in this collection:
Kent Coast Oyster Obliteration
Wedding Ceremony Woes
Eton Mess Massacre
Cornish Pasty Conspiracy
Vet’s Waiting Room
The Gastrothief
Lyme Regis Layover
The Case of the Missing Pasty
Majestic Mystery
Hell Cat
Police Dog: Day one

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Recommended to all pet lovers. Sometimes dogs,
horses and cats really do show amazing understanding of what we humans are trying to accomplish.
The humor and unique twists in the Steve Highs books will hook one and keep one reading. Most especially those of Albert Smith and his wonder dog Rex Harrison. Enjoy!

It took a couple stories, but the characters are so darn charming and fun. Higgs is not a very skilled writer, sometimes quite clunky, but his characters are endearing, and the attention to food and British villages makes for great reading. Suggest going along for Albert's tour, taking breaks reading other things on your table or tablet. Definitely written for an older demographic, and pacing gives a long build, with plenty of mayhem.

Albert and Rex make good partners in this easy and interesting to read series.
A couple of their solved crimes were too far-fetched (pun intended) for me, but the majority
were plausible for a well-connected partnership, as Rex and Albert are.

Albert, Rex and others continue to be entertaining in the style I have come to expect from Steve Higgs .
He puts the readers inside his protagonist (s) minds whether they are human, canine or feline. I find this series remarkable in its imagination and lack of redundancy.

    Keep up the excellent work.

Except I don't care for the wedding story in this series. The wedding and Felicia story was out of place and could somehow be better.

Great stories, I am sure that animals do converse. They are very
Astute in these tales. Smarter than some people.

These books are a nice light read, decent plot line with the humorous dogs view point adding to the mix. I like this different view of a detective story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series

I loved the adventures of Albert & Rex. Despite that fact that all of the books are stand alone, it was so such a pleasure to read them in a bundle to continue the bigger story. They have the most outrageous plots, delightful characters (both human and animal), and lots of humour. You will keeping reading just to see how they can possibly extricate themselves from the impossible situations that they often find themselves in. This would make a wonderful TV series! Thanks Steve for all of your wonderful ideas and hard work.
